A “root canal” is necessary when the soft inner tissue of the tooth “the pulp” becomes inflamed or infected.  On occasion, root canal therapy is unsuccessful.  In these cases, endodontic surgery may be needed to improve success, hopefully prolonging the life of the tooth.

The most common endodontic surgery is called “apicoectomy” or root-end resection (root-clipping).  This procedure involves opening the gums to remove inflamed or infected tissue, and in most cases, the tip of the root.  Many times, a sealer filling is placed at the tip of the root.

Typically, patients can return to work on the following day.  Dr. Bosack will follow these cases for at least the first 3 months,  until xrays show that healing is occurring.  Sometimes, teeth will need to be fitted with new crowns, once the apicoectomy is performed.
