After teeth are lost, the jawbone associated with these teeth tends to shrink. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and/or quantity of bone. If implants are desired in these locations, bone grafting will be necessary in order to properly anchor the implant. Today, we have the ability and technology to graft and “grow” bone where needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore function and esthetic appearance. This type of grafting is done as an outpatient in our office locations. In these cases, bone is typically harvested from the chin or other regions of the lower jaw. In some cases, bone products from tissue banks can be used.
In addition, special membranes may be utilized that dissolve under the gum and protect the bone graft and encourage bone regeneration. This is called guided bone regeneration or guided tissue regeneration.
On a larger scale, bone in the jaws or facial regions can also be lost due to trauma or tumor surgery. These surgeries are major operations which are performed by Dr. Bosack in a hospital setting. In these cases, bone is typically harvested from the hip or skull.
